Elias Lindholm scored at 2:32 of overtime as the Boston Bruins rallied from two goals down in the third period to beat the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Lindholm took Charlie McAvoy’s assist, drove hard to the front of the net and slotted the game-winner past outstretched Chicago goaltender Arvid Soderblom after Boston counterpart Michael DiPietro (37 saves) stopped Anton Frondell’s hat trick bid on a breakaway at the other end.
David Pastrnak, Casey Mittelstadt, Mason Lohrei and Morgan Geekie also scored for Boston, with the latter two scoring in the third. Pastrnak passed Patrice Bergeron for third on the franchise’s all-time goals list (428).
After Ryan Greene and Connor Bedard (one goal, one assist) scored back-to-back goals to give Chicago a 4-2 lead with 7:40 left in the third, Lohrei brought the Bruins back within one goal 46 seconds later. After taking the puck deep, the defenseman attacked the net and scored JJ Peterka’s feed from behind the net to the post.
Geekie and the Bruins took advantage of an offensive-zone shift after an icing call to score the tying goal with 12 ticks to go. Soderblom made an initial save on Peterka before McAvoy set up Geekie with a one-time feed to the left circle.
The Blackhawks had a 41-32 shot advantage. Soderblom made 16 of his 32 saves in the third period and overtime.
Chicago’s Patrick Kane became the first American-born player with 900 career assists on Frondell’s opening goal.
Chicago whipped the puck around and opened the scoring on its first power play at 6:04. After Connor Bedard played it at the point, Kane threaded a pass across the low slot to Frondell, who stepped into an open one-timer from the right circle.
Pastrnak tied the game at 13:05. DiPietro made a save on Tyler Bertuzzi in traffic before Pavel Zacha flipped a backhander off the defensive-zone wall and down the middle to Pastrnak, who put a wrister upstairs on a breakaway against Soderblom.
In the second, Frondell gave Chicago the lead back when he deflected Bertuzzi’s shot off the wall at the 3:31 mark.
Mittelstadt brought Boston back to even for the second time at 12:34, taking a transition feed from Hagens near the blue line and snapped it past Soderblom from the top of the right circle.
